Thanks to Francesca for suggesting this visit to an ancient Yew near Runnymede (nearest station Wraysbury, accessed from Waterloo).

We will meet at 3.35 pm at Wraysbury station. Note the time is a bit later than usual to allow for the longer journey.

The train leaves from London Waterloo at 14.44 and arrives at 15.35. You will need to plan to arrive at Waterloo in good time for this train, as there is only one an hour!

Look out for the train to Feltham, Staines, and Windsor & Eton Riverside on the boards. It also stops at Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Putney, Richmond, and Twickenham so if any of those are more useful, check the
Sunday timetable.

If the train is delayed, please contact Francesca if you have her mobile number (Daniel’s mobile has just broken).

Return times from Wraysbury are 8 minutes past the hour every hour.

Daniel can offer a lift to two people, if anyone would find it easier to get to Crystal Palace. Please phone him a week in advance if you’d like to book a lift. If anyone else would like to offer a lift-share, please post a comment here, along with your location and contact number.
Approximate map of area
Apparently the yew is somewhere near the marked priory on the north bank of the Thames (opposite side from Runnymede). Wraysbury station is further NE of this on map.

Please phone Daniel in advance or leave a comment here if you are coming along. 020 8771 6941
Sorry, Daniel’s mobile has just broken so it won’t be available.

  2. I can give a lift from Harrow (my house near Harrow & Wealdstone station, or I can pick up from Harrow on the Hill, South Harrow or Northolt stations). I would want to leave here at about 2pm. If you want a lift, call me on 07768 377 646.

  4. Hi everyone. I have a little map of Wraysbury I printed off the internet and some quite precise directions from the National Trust so we should be fine to find the tree. The walk from the station doesn’t look too bad. Despite it being on NT land there’s no charge or anything. There’s not much parking apparently so it’s probably a good thing not many of us will come by car. They also say ‘non-existent facilities’ which probably means no loos, though we could probably find somewhere in Wraysbury itself.

  5. It’s a good idea if we all bring along some nibbles / your choice of picnicky food. No need to bring much, but we won’t be near to any cafes or pubs!

  6. I can also take 2-3 people in my car. I will pick up from Ealing Broadway (Central and District Line) or Perivale (Picadilly Line).

Give me a ring at 07786-953212 or 020-8575 8377 (on the latter, be prepared that I snap at you because so many idiots try to sell me double-glazing or other stuff. Don’t be deterred – once I understand your druids, I will be nice ;-)))

As Hilde leaves at around 2, I think I will do the same, so make sure that your line is at your destination before that.

    CU on Sunday

  7. Petra, I sympathise about the sales calls – I used to get loads of them when I first moved to my current house. I registered with the Telephone Preference Service, which is free, and I don’t get those calls any more, save for the occasional recorded message with an American accent telling me I’ve won a holiday. Go to http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ and click on ‘Register’. See you on Sunday!

  8. Good idea to bring nibbles – but it’s possible there might be a cafe at Runnymede as there’s National Trust things there. I’ll check it out and report back!

  9. Yes there’s the Magna Carta tearoom (!) at Runnymede, also a loo, though I don’t know quite how far it is from Ankerwyke. I think not too far. I’m just hoping the whole place isn’t too full of tourists.

  10. Francesca, walking over to Runnymede looks like quite a way. As far as I could see, there is no bridge over the river at Ankerwyke itself, so it is a bit of a longish walk round – and I’m a bit worried we will be short of time. I’m happy to go over there if enough people would like to on Sunday, though. I suggested nibbles for another reason too: because we’ll be doing a guided meditation and they are useful to help ground people after the meditation is finished. So I’ll be bringing some, and it is probably a good idea for people to bring something small even if they would like to try for the cafe.
