Good locations for Gorse?

Filed under: Conversation — Lorraine @ 10:41 pm

I’m posing this question on behalf of Daniel as I am online right now. He is looking for somewhere reasonably near to London where he can find some gorse bushes. I wondered if any of you might remember a good location? The nearest I can think of are the Sussex Downs near Ditchling Beacon, and Blean Woods in Kent – both a bit of a drive away.

  1. Stanmore Common has some. As does the Little Common closer to the centre of Stanmore, at the very end of the Jubilee Line. That’s still a bit of a drive away for you, though!
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some on Hampstead Heath somewhere, but I wouldn’t know.

  2. Thanks, it’s worth knowing about. After searching a little harder I found somewhere closer to home, apparently there’s some gorse around the Wimbledon Common/Putney Heath area.

  3. Had a look around Wimbledon Common today. We didn’t go that far north and only found one gorse bush (which is fine, one is enough) but it’s a good location for heather which is in flower now. In general the common has more tree cover than I expected, and could be another possibility for rituals, though it would need a proper recce another time.
