This event will not be at the weekend, but on the actual day. Lorraine is organising Solstice Sunrise viewing.

We will be meeting at Lorraine’s house, then going to Crystal Palace Park in time for sunrise.
Come to Lorraine and Daniel’s house with suitable sleeping gear. We will be getting up in time for dawn over Chrystal Palace Park with Eastwards facing views.

  1. I suggest people bringing dishes for a pot luck dinner on the evening of the 20th.

  2. That would be a great idea, Hilde. On the subject of sleeping gear, I have a spare kingsize mattress. The sofa is also a sofabed (although it may be replaced before then). So if anyone has blow-up mattresses it would be a good idea to bring them along.

My ideas for this are at an early stage so far but I don’t think a formal ritual involving circle casting would be the way to go. It’s most likely that this will include a silent period as the sun comes up, then some poetry reading relevant to the season, and libations of mead!

  3. I think this sounds a fantastic idea – I’ll take a day’s leave – I definitely want to be there. I’ve long wanted to celebrate one of the Solstices in Druidic company. Only ever been on my own before. Must get writing some poetry now!

  4. Just a couple of things. If anyone is coming along, it would be really helpful if you could give me slightly more notice than usual – not a huge amount of time, but say by the Saturday. Phone no. is 020 8771 6941 or send me an email. Also, if anyone is thinking that they might not stay over, but would like to meet at the park (N3 night bus terminates nearby and there is an open way into the park just to the left of the bus station) could they let me know, too. This is just in case I decide to go over to Croham Hurst, another fairly local high place, instead. Chances are that I will do this in the Park as stated, though.

  5. Hi Lorraine – may I book a bit of floor for definite please? And may I also bring a very druid and pagan-friendly friend?

    Thanks!

    Francesca

Oh by the way I have a new mobile number – 07900 925470 – which is why you wouldn’t have been able to get through to me the other week.

  6. Yes, that’s fine, Francesca, and new number noted down. That makes 4 confirmed for the stayover so far and 1 other to meet us in the morning besides Daniel and I, so if you have an airbed or two to bring, it might come in handy. If not I’m sure we can sort out something.

  7. Thanks, that’s great. Don’t have any airbeds, but will have a couple of sleeping bags which will do fine I’m sure! Really looking forward to it!

  9. I have some bad news I’m afraid.

There is a railway strike planned for the 20th June, effective for 24 hours from 1pm onwards which is very likely to disrupt travel plans. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_bulletins/c8b505a10a0400020087fb45cc2bd8c2.html
Please check for more up to date info nearer to the time in case anything changes. I will send this info out as a group email as well, so that no-one misses it. I have some bus route info if anyone is interested in alternatives.

The Tube will be running normally and the no.3 bus can be picked up from Brixton which is on the Victoria line: exit the stop, turn left and the relevant stop will be the first one you come to.

The northern line goes to Balham. From there you can get a 249 bus – the bus stop is on Balham High road, just around the corner from the tube station to the right, outside McDonalds. This may be the least crowded option.

You could also get a 363 bus from Elephant & Castle – this is likely one of the slower routes, though. The bus stop would be on London Road.

  10. Aaaaand here is the good news!

    The strike has been cancelled.

  11. Thanks to all who came along. It’s a pity the weather wasn’t on our side, but I think everyone enjoyed it – I certainly did. I hope you’ve all caught up with your sleep!
