Cilla will host a cloak making workshop at her house, on Sunday, 13 January. This may be a whole day event.

She will get in touch with everyone to let us now what kind of material to bring and how much.

  1. This will begin at 11 a.m. at my house in Sutton. Email me if you don’t have my address.

If you’re interested in coming to this event, please bring with you the following:

For women: around 5 1/2 yards of 60″ wide, or 6 1/2 yards of 50″ – this can be any type of material although wool would of course be the warmest!
If you don’t want a hood, you will probably get away with 1/2 metre less. (Sorry, all the patterns give the measurements in yards! If you buy in metres, cut the amount down by about 1/4-1/2 yard.)

For men: you need around 6 3/4 yards, 6 1/4 yards without a hood.

You may well find that you have fabric left over from this – I usually cut very frugally, but I’m small so I always make things shorter. If you’re skint and want to cut the amounts down by 1/2 yard, we’ll probably be able to manage.

I would also recommend making a lining for it of some sort. Lining can be any type of material, but the standard lining is usually much narrower – 45″ wide if you’re lucky, and the pattern recommends 71/2 yards of that – though you can get the same amount of lining as main material if it’s wide.

By far the best supplier I know of wool (and other material) is Bernie the Bolt – http://www.calltoarms.com/bolt/index.html. Contact details: berniethebolt3@aol.com

Bernie’s woollen fabric is around £8 metre – if you tell him there are a number of people making cloaks and I’ve recommended you to him, as I’ve seen him at Herstmonceux, you will find him very helpful, though he doesn’t give advice on amounts of fabric needed!

Of course there are fabric departments in John Lewis and the other department stores, though they will be much more expensive. Petticoat Lane on a Sunday, Brick Lane, or Ladbroke Grove markets, have several places selling good quality fabric much cheaper than the department stores. The place I bought my gold material (the lining for the ovate cloak/coat I wore at the Winter Solstice) is Norman Lyons & Co., 106 Cleveland Street, London W1, Tel. 020 7380 1515. They have a good selection of fabric, though it’s all polyester type stuff, not wool. You can always buy furnishing fabrics, and sometimes you can get lucky looking in charity shops for curtains, which are often very good quality material and lined to boot. If you go that route, the curtains will need unpicking before you arrive!

You will also need thread to match both fabrics, and a box of pins.

I have 2 lady’s cloak patterns and 2 men’s, and I’ll probably duplicate them so everyone can cut out at the same time. If you want to buy your own pattern, have a look in John Lewis or on ebay!
